GIRLY
Growing up, the term “girly” meant someone who loved the color pink, wore dresses, lots of makeup, and hated sports. The term itself was often used as an insult, by both girls and boys. “Wow you’re so girly, you wore a dress today” or “I hate getting my nails painted, it’s so girly”. The term girly should be available for anyone who wants to outwardly express their femininity, not stereotypes. As this year went on I caught myself saying “I want to be more girly” and I could not figure out why. What does that mean, to be “more girly” at age 20?
Girly was developed through my personal experience in college,  reaching my twenties, new elements of sexism in my life, and my own personal growth. My project revolves around the term “girly”, and breaking down the phrase, and rediscovering its true meaning.
This project was created through both video and photography. The video contains a series of montages of daily activities and situations that I believe make me feel the most “girly”. The motion and sound of the video create a feeling that photos can not achieve. The photos slow down the viewer, and allow them to focus in on still moments. The photos hold a similar theme to the video; illustrating moments in my life that make me feel or express this element of “girly”. They all work together to portray, in my eyes, what it means to be girly at age 20.
